Two days ago the Tour de France began. Running from the 2nd-24th July, the competition is in its 98th year. Here at s-p we have joined the cycle fever by taking a brief look at all things bike-inspired.

Something Old: A favourite with the s-p team, Belleville Rendez-Vous was released in 2003, directed by comic book artist, Sylvian Chomet. It’s an 80 minute film about the orphaned grandson of Madame Souza who is kidnapped by the French mafia while he is cycling the Tour de France. The film is primarily dialogue-free, beautiful and witty.

Something New: We love this walnut-framed bike designed by Chicago’s Lagomorph Design.

Something Special: Earlier this month over 1000 naked cyclists rode through London to call for action to halt climate change and encourage more people to use greener ways of travelling in their city.

Something Present: Our Founder and MD, Sarah, has ditched four wheels, in favour of two. As the rest of us join the morning queue at the kettle for our daily fix of caffeine, Sarah bursts through the s-p doors already awake, healthy and freshly energised; ready to seize the day. Sarah says she feels liberated and even only after a month of cycling is no longer so easily overtaken on her active commute to work.

Something Borrowed, Something Blue: ‘Boris Bikes’  (despite the fact they were commissioned by his predecessor), are no longer an eyesore on the streets of London, but have rather grown to be as acceptable as a bendy bus and as normal as a red pillarbox. According to TFL,  since their launch in August 2010:

1) seven million miles have been cycled. 2) 100000 people have signed up. 3) 3566 bikes (30 a day) have had to be repaired. 4) 180 bikes have been vandalised. 5) 10 bikes have been stolen.
