Maya Claughton

Maya Claughton is a stylist, a writer, the founder of the creative consultancy, Midnight Sun, and she has travelled the world. She now lives in Ibiza town and is so well connected that she writes her own blog on Ibiza for Maya’s got an enviable lifestyle, effortless style and a glowing tan. We invited Maya to the s-p headquarters for a spot of dressing up and a chat.

Why is Ibiza your favourite place in the world? I’ve been coming here since I was a kid so fell in love early on. It’s such a special place; one minute I can be doing a high profile event with fashion or music people, and the next I can be having lunch in a meadow or on the beach. In Ibiza people can happily live a dual lifestyle.

What is your Ibiza style staple? I love the local espadrilles, a pair of slouchy washed denim shorts and a vintage lace top.

What is your usual day? I wake up at 7.30 am, go for a run with my boyfriend to the castle at the top of the hill then do some yoga at the top. The views from there are incredible. Afterwards I head home for coffee and emails. I write my blog everyday; it normally takes about an hour, then I might prep for a shoot. If I have appointments I go by car (my 27 year old mark 1 Golf) and then usually have lunch on the beach with friends.

Cami de Balafia at night

What is your secret Ibiza tip? There’s a place called Cami de Balafia with the best outdoor bbq grill. There’s no menu and everyone and anyone goes there.

What are your thoughts on the boho style associated with the Island? Everyone on the Island is into boho. I’m a more slouchy separates girl. In fact I’m never really girly, I always tone down feminine pieces with a biker jacket.

What’s hot news in Ibiza? There’s always so much happening in Ibiza. To keep up with all the latest news about what’s hot on the Island check out my Ibiza Blog on

Do you have a style Icon? Not really, although if I had to pick out someone with great style, I’d have to say Georgina Scarborough. She’s a friend of mine who runs her own production company and always looks great.

The Giri Residence in San Juan

Where would you say is the best place to stay in Ibiza? The Giri Residence in San Juan is a beautiful hideaway. It’s designed by the incredible design team, KSAR, and is probably one of the most perfect places to stay on the Island.

What’s the best way to escape the hustle and bustle of Ibiza? I like to escape to Formentera with my boyfriend for a long weekend of  relaxing. When I’m there I spend the days at the Gecko beach club, doing yoga with my friend Jax from Formentera Yoga and having fresh seafood and rosé wine at el Tiburon.

How long is the perfect trip to Ibiza? The ideal break would be 9 days in Ibiza then 4 days in Formentera to unwind.

What advice would you have to families coming to Ibiza? Rent a villa in the north and check out el Chiringuito crèche for the kids.

What are your beauty tips? I do 20 minutes of running and 20 minutes of yoga a day.  I wear scent by Diptique or Kiehls original musk. My moisturiser is from Biotherm, my bronzer from bare minerals, I use Lancome mascara and either a nude glossy lip or red lips. I never match my nails with my toes and favour bright colours.

What are you listening to? 80s disco, 90s soul, and any of Kitt Proudfoot’s mixes.

Swimsuit or bikini? Bikini if I’m sunbathing and a swimsuit if I’m socialising.

Silk shirt by Equipment, shorts by Current/Elliott, bag by Vida Vida and shoes by Georgina Goodman

Shirt or kaftan? I’m not a kaftan girl and much rather cover-up with a silk shirt on the beach.

What is inside your beach bag? Something that can take me from day to night as I normally like to go straight out with friends after being on the beach.  I usually  wear boyfriend shorts, a bikini, an oversized silk shirt and flats. I make sure I’ve got a decent piece of jewellery on and a clutch. If I go out I lose the shorts and wear the shirt as a dress.

What’s the best place to shop in Ibiza? It’s not easy to shop in Ibiza; it’s either really high-end or really boho-hippy style – there’s really no middle ground. That changed a bit when Revolver opened, however that and the flea markets are the only places I tend to go shopping. I really like trying things on so I normally wait until I come to London.

What’s missing in Ibiza? The high street.

Hey, love Maya’s work and think she’s great just not sure about the last comment. I think the High Street is the one thing Ibiza definitely isn’t missing. With every town in Britain now looking the same due to High Street chains, thank goodness Ibiza remains different.

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.
