Stay at Taplow House Hotel, a historic English country house built in 1598 and set within six acres of beautiful gardens

Travel specialists and friends of s-p, Travesse, have come up with some wonderful suggestions for the perfect staycation weekend in Buckinghamshire.

Cliveden House

• Cliveden A country retreat on a grand scale, this stunning 19th-century house has played host to almost every British monarch since George I. Now managed by the National Trust and operating as a grand country hotel, this superb estate is well worth a visit. Built on the top of a steep river bank overlooking the Thames, the mansion affords beautiful views and the expansive grounds extend over thick woodland, formal gardens and romantic countryside. If you pay a visit in the summer time, be sure to stop by the Long Walk and take a peek at the pair of enormous granite baboons, which originated in Ancient Egypt and date back to the time of the Pharaohs.

Windsor Castle

• Windsor The Royal Borough of Windsor is home to not one, but two of the UK’s top 20 visitor attractions – Windsor Castle and Legoland Windsor, both of which attract droves of visitors year after year. However, the area is also proud of its natural beauty, as there are over 1,000 acres of Natural Trust Land to enjoy, complete with public footpaths and byways and picture-postcard villages packed with quaint pubs and antique shops.

The Hand and Flowers pub

• The Hand & Flowers Pub This two Michelin-starred pub in the riverside town of Marlow has hit the papers for all the right reasons. Managed by Tom and Beth Kerridge, this beautiful Georgian establishment is the first pub in the UK to be awarded two Michelin Stars. The sensational menu features rustic French dishes that are a long way from pub grub as well as many that stay true to British flavours, albeit with a modern twist.

The Chiltern Brewery

• The Chiltern Brewery This independent brewery, which is the oldest in the area, is situated in nearby Wendover. Founded in 1980, this family-run brewery focuses on producing natural, wholesome beers using the best, class A malt and hops sourced in England. Visit to stock up on beery treats in their brewery shop or even book a tour of the establishment. A wonderful place to come for a day out to sample some delicious beverages.

Waddeson Manor

• Waddesdon Manor Further afield, in the countryside surrounding Aylesbury, sits the stunning Waddesdon Manor. Now managed by the National Trust, Waddesdon Manor bears the mark of four generations of the Rothschild family. Visitors can tour 45 rooms of the extensive manor, which are crammed with glitzy 18th-century French furniture and exceptional portraiture by Reynolds and Gainsborough. Outside, the wild hillside has been transformed over the years into extensive formal and romantic gardens, and there is even a beautiful turquoise aviary, which houses a number of rare and critically endangered bird species, giving you plenty to coo over.
