Wear in the World: Marrakech

If you’re looking for a bit of warmth to see you through the colder months then look no further than Marrakech. We’ve asked fashion journalist, Laura Weir, for her tips on holidaying in Marrakech…

Favourite destination: Marrakech

Best place to eat: Le Tobsil, I went here with my mother and sister and it was truly one of the most wonderful dining experiences of my life. You walk down endless tunnels and tiny alleys to find this place and once inside it’s paradise, the interior is like something from an Arabian dream and the food is perfect.

Best place to sleep: Try and stay in the Medina. I was totally freaked out when we arrived in the dark, but once you get your bearings around the maze of the Medina it’s the best place to be. Lots of the Rhiads don’t have pools, but my tip would be to make sure you find one that does.

Best time of year to visit: When it’s cold in the UK, it’s warm there, so go when you’re in need of winter sun.

Things to avoid: Wine, I didn’t have one good drop while I was there, the Medina in the dark (always take a torch) and the markets. I know that’s controversial but unless you like lamps, stinky leather and carpets there are no bargains to be had. I preferred to visit monuments and galleries, take photos and just wander the streets!

Off the beaten track finds: If you do one thing go to Le Jardin Majorelle. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge lived, and curated a stunning house and garden full of colour and creativity here. You can wander to your heart’s content. Instead of sending Christmas cards, Yves would send a New Year card to his closest friends, and each year was illustrated differently. These are all displayed in the house, and are totally cool.

Best holiday fashion for destination: I bought a Bedouin tunic while I was in Marrakech that is full length, covered in bright furry pom-poms and embroidery which I’ve worn on every hot holiday ever since. It’s perfect for throwing over your bikini. If you go in the hotter months, definitely take a hat and a shawl to throw round your shoulders if you venture into some of the more traditional areas.

Beauty tip: Go for a spa day at Les Bains Marrakech for a hamman and full body massage, I’ve never been so relaxed.

What I bought: A Bedouin tunic, some silver, spices and loads of postcards at La Jardin Majorelle and an Yves Klein blue pot.

What I learnt: Everyone warned me that women tourists in Marrakech get loads of hassle, so I was on the defensive as soon as I arrived. But that was bad advice. I didn’t get hassled once and instead people were helpful, kind and friendly.
